Raked Flower

The raked flower uses similar techniques to the raked vine. This flower has five/ten petals, the one in the tutorial is showing three/six petals.

1. Make your base bead. Place a small dot of a contrasting colour where you want the centre of your flower to be. Try and think ahead and know that if you place an orange dot on a black bead for example, it is going to be very hard to see when the bead is hot.

2. Make your outer petals. Place three or more dots around your centre dot. You’ll find three is an easier number to begin with, the more you place the more complicated the design becomes and the more control you’re going to need!

3. Heat these dots and flatten them.

4. Next add your inner layer of petals in whichever colour you choose.

5. Heat these petals and flatten them.

6. Next comes the praying to the bead fairies part… Get your pick ready!! Remembering to get the bead hot enough but not too hot you then want to place your pick right on the edge of the first petal you are going to rake. Depending on what torch you are using, you may have the luxury of being able to heat just that petal with a fairly pinpoint flame.

**If you place the pick within the petal you will get a softer point to the petal. If you want a sharp point try and get the pick right on the border of the base glass and petal colours.

7. Pull the rake lightly and gently in the direction you want the tip of the petal to be.

8. Repeat this process with the other background petals.

9. Now you need to do the same thing to the inner petals. The flower is starting to take shape!

10. Using the colour you have chosen for the centre of your flower, place a dot right in the middle of the petals.

11. Heat and flatten this dot.

12. You can add other colours within this centre if you want! And here is your flower!
