Goddess Beads

Goddess images appear in many religions and cultures.

Sometimes called the Great Mother, this powerful archetype occurs in different forms through the ages and is a universal symbol of fertility, creation, wisdom and new beginnings.

Throughout history we’ve seen her in many forms -

The Venus of Willendorf is a very famous statuette dating from 24,000 BC and 22,000 BC 200px-Venus_von_Willendorf_01

The ancient Egyptians and Greeks each had  their pantheons of Goddess’ as did many other tribes and cultures.

Today, the Goddess form can be found in Art and in jewellery – many lampworkers create sculpted figures, not unlike the ancient Willendorf.

Creating Goddess beads was not something I thought I’d find myself doing, but I was captivated by a picture in a Cindy Jenkins book of a bead made by Sage Holland.

It was a Goddess bead, but not a sculpted one.  Sage’s Goddess was much more ancient, almost primeval.  She was created on the surface of bead by  connecting a triangular shaped body with a head and arms that were formed from dots of glass.  This Goddess spoke to me more than all the sculpted ones I had seen.

My first Goddess beads came from this inspiration,

and I remember feeling so pleased with this one in particular -

Since then, slowly my design has evolved – somewhere along the line I raked her body into a feminine curved shape.

One day I added a murrini chip to her body -

She slowly became something that I think is quite unique.  I feel my Goddess beads have a quality of quiet spiritually about them while also portraying inner strength.

Each one is made from fire and glass, many are embellished with silver which gives a wonderful organic background for the figure and as I mentioned many are also decorated with murrini.  Every Goddess is different, the shapes vary as do the designs in their bodies.

This design is one that  keeps evolving, some have an ocean theme -
